View Full Version : Duplicate Transactions

Hi Folks,

Duplicate transactions are caused by one of the two items below:

a) Accounts being added twice (a big we're working on fixing). If you have duplicate transactions because an account has been added more than once, please do remove one of the duplicate accounts on your accounts' tab by clicking on the "x".

OR

b) Mint identified duplicate transactions (single account, multiple transactions from the same account) more than once. We've since resolved this issue (as of Sep.7th) & this problem should be less prevalent. If you have duplicate transactions in this circumstance, please use the "exclude from Mint" option when to categorize these transactions (doesn't delete, only removes it from your totals). I am sad to report that there's no way for us to remove these & that's why you need to use the "exclude from Mint" option.

Note on (b): This should be less of a problem going forward. The technical explanation would probably bore a lot of folks & would only lead to greater confusion.

I noticed duplicate transactions showing up after telling mint to manually update from the accounts page. Only one account, my US Bank Checking shows duplicates from Sep 24. I did make two $40 ATM withdrawls(sp?), but shows it four times, and an ATM Deposit for $62.89 is listed twice. I think I told it to update all my accounts at the same time, in case that contributes to the issue...

Please let me know if I can provide more useful information.

Now that Mint is automatically updating from my bank accounts, I'm seeing an error where it pulls in the authorization for a charge and then pulls in the final charge as a second transaction. There are a great many of these and they're really messing up the accounting. Is there any way to fix this problem? Having to go through and tell Mint to exclude all of the authorizations is going to make the system almost unusable.

thanks!

Another fix for duplicates is going live tonight (the 24th). This problem should get better going forward....

Note: It is generally caused by a change in transaction status, such as from pending to completed.

I'm seeing duplications with my Wachovia account. What is the recommended method to remove these duplicates so they don't mess up the accounting?

I don't see a "delete" option to remove these transactions. I turned my wife on to Mint...she really likes it but is frustrated with the few duplicates we're seeing right now and the inability to correct.

Help me out.:(

I've been one of the few to not be hit with the horror of duplicate transactions....until this morning. And now, almost every transaction going back into March somehow now has a duplicate in my Chase Checking account! This somehow needs to fixed quickly or give us some type of delete functionality.

Not coincidentally, on April 14 Chase implemented a change (check your secure inbox) whereby all your accounts show up on all your user ids. So, if you have two Chase user ids and add them both to Mint, you are effectively adding your accounts twice. You now only need one user id. So, delete one from Mint and see if that fixes it. You might want to call Chase to delete the unused id, as you no longer need it to view your accounts online either and having multiple just increases the risk for one being compromised.

Well, a funny thing happened on my way to check my accounts today. The duplicates in my Chase Checking account are gone! Mint, if you did this for little ole me I'm very grateful! :)

BTW, Bob I didn't see an email when I logged into Chase stating what you said. Maybe it affected only certain users??

Well, I wish that were the case for me, but I've only ever had 1 user ID with Chase. I didn't see the online notification, either. At any rate, I've just gotten very very confused with all of this - I'm still having transactions jumbled between two different accounts.

This bug is not fixed. In comes and goes. Currently I have dups for several days and other dates are fine.

E*Trade checking has a great feature where you can update a transaction's name field. This is handy when you want to look at the check image and enter in the name.

Unfortunately this trips up mint big time. Whenever I change a transaction name it ends up duplicated. Big pain.

Why not make the name change on Mint instead of on E-Trade?

I'm getting duplicate transactions for all entries from my CITI card account using virtual account numbers on-line. A real PIA.

I have a single duplicated transaction - my Fed Stimulus Tax rebate shows twice in Mint, but only once in my WaMu account. Why? and how do I correct this?

I can't say why. I can say, though, how to fix it. Just find the duplicate in the transactions tab and set it as "ignore from mint" category.

I seem to be getting duplicate transactions when making debit card purchases at point of sales terminals at Costco and Walmart.

One is listed as a "VALUE CHECKING DDA PURCHASE" and the other as "VALUE CHECKING POS PURCHASE".

Is my problem related to the one being discussed in this thread?

Note: Duplicates happen for a wide variety of reasons, including how the transactions get recorded at banks & merchants (pending to completed, for example).

We recently came up with a solution for flagging duplicates. While duplicates will never entirely go away, the new process should make it easier for you to flag duplicates & remove them from appearing in things like Trends.

Please do the following to flag a transaction as duplicate:

1. Locate the transaction that is a duplicate on the transactions' tab.
2. Click on the box.
3. The right side of the page has a "This is a duplicate" box. Check on the box.

Note: This feature currently only supports marking duplicates one at a time. In addition, marking a transaction as a duplicate will not change your account balance.

We rolled out a fix for the duplicates issue for future duplicates. Please let us know how it's working for you. Past duplicates is a separate issue that I'll announce when we fix

I am having the duplicate issue with my USAA account. Mint is recognizing 'pending' transactions as actual transacions, then changes the name of the acutal transaction when it goes through.

I have a basic question that relates to categorizing transactions as duplicates. When I pay off my credit card, that transaction shows as a withdrawal from my bank account (expense) and payment on my credit card (deposit).

How does Mint handle this transaction since the same transaction shows up twice on two different accounts with one as an expense and one as a deposit? Which do you mark as duplicate?

Justin Maxwell
08-06-2008, 02:20 PM
neither of the two are duplicates, since -- if i'm understanding correctly -- mint is reflecting exactly what you are doing. duplicate transactions are more when an ATM withdrawal shows up 12 times.

Justin,

Ah! So I need not bother marking those transactions as duplicate even if I see them twice (one +ve and other -ve) in my transactions list?

Hi,

I'm a relatively new user. Today my CITI credit card entries were all duplicated (pairs only, thankfully) on transactions dated from July 3 through Aug 3.

These same transactions were fine yesterday, so I know it isn't a problem of a change in transaction status, etc... what gives? What can I do to prevent this?

I already went through marking them one by one.

Thanks for your help and the fun application.

pcmhatre99 - that's right. If you have a negative transaction in your checking account that matches up to a positive transaction in your credit card account, both of those should be categorized as Transfer->Credit Card Payment. That isn't a duplicate.

A duplicate is if you see the same transaction occuring repeatedly from the same account (could happen to multiple accounts).

Justin, right now I have 9 out of my first 50 transactions that I had to flag as duplicates. This type of number of duplicates has been consistent for about the past month. What can I do to help the situation/what is Mint doing? I see that you've rolled out some patches, but for whatever reason they don't seem to help.

Justin,

If they truly are duplicates, the bank details would be the same. However, I think you'll find these are two separate transactions in separate banks. So no, you shouldn't mark them as duplicates.

Letting us know is a good first step. Thanks for your post, and we'll continue refining our product and eliminating more duplicates in the future.

I am also encountering a ridiculous number of duplicates on my credit card transactions. It is rendering the Mint program unusable for me. I'm close to the edge; please help.

I'm also finding mint less and less helpful as the duplicate issue isn't getting resolved. It would seem like you'd be able to at least make it really fast for me to manually remove them, by pairing up charges where the payee, amount, and date are exactly the same, and letting me "SELECT ALL" and "REMOVE DUPLICATES".

Right now, every time I log into mint, for one particular account (my bank of america credit card, my most used credit card), it pulls in pending transactions. The next time I log in, it pulls in the completed transactions. So the less I log into mint, the less of a problem it is for me. Not behavior you'd want to encourage, I would think.

I've been a user for over a hear, and for months I've been hoping this would get fixed. I sent an email to that effect 6 weeks ago, and here's the response:

Dear Blake,

Thank you for contacting Mint.com.

Some Mint customers are reporting issues with duplicate transactions appearing because of how banks record transactions (pending to completed, for example). Until that time, customers may want to use the "exclude from Mint" option for transactions (available when you categorize a transaction) to remove the duplicates from tallying in their account (note: this doesn't delete the transaction from your account). Mint also hopes to release a full delete transaction feature down the road.

Please note: some duplicates may fall off after a few days.

To exclude a transaction:

1. Login to your Mint account.

2. Locate the transaction you want to exclude on the categorization page. You can also double click on the category for the transaction to open the categorization option.

3. Use the drop down menus on the categorization page to find the exclude option.

Not helpful. Can I sign up to be on a mailing list once it's easier for me to remove all duplicates, or once mint fixes the issue? There's no way I'm going to use mint if I have to remove every duplicate one by one.

I started using mint before anyone I know, and have yet to recommend it to anyone because of this issue.

Thanks!

Blake

I was doing great with Mint my first few weeks, then today I got duplicates on a bunch of items! Maybe it was because it was the new day of one of my credit card cycles or ?? I agree with the other users that this is a big problem, as it is a pain to mark them individually and if I don't catch them, it will elevate my perceived spending.

Also, if I could do an annual budget, that would be helpful. Is that something that will be coming out?

thanks
