So I want to get my spending under control.

There are 3 things that I believe to be important.

1. Income
2. Fixed expense (e.g. Rent, Insurance, Utilities, etc)
3. Varied expense (e.g. groceries, restaurants, etc)

When I setup up my budget in Mint to I want to track on #3 or should I add #2 as well?

Thank you

When I do budgeting I want to track ALL 3. My income also has a fixed (Salary, rents) and variable component (investments, commissions and bonus). As for expenses I want to take both fixed and variable. variable for the obvious reason that it varies over time and that I may or may not have control of that. As for Fixed expenses, I still have control on the costs but the time to change that control is longer. For example with utilities I can decide to restrict my use of water and gas more by taking saving measures. I recently installed a waterless tank with the hopes of reducing my gas bill. With mortgage we have been paying off quicker and refinancing to reduce our monthly bill.

The combination of income and expenses, fixed and variable provides me visibility to my savings. Without both I can not budget my savings.

Today you are not able to add income to your budget in Mint. That is the weakness that exist today. Without being able to budget both my income and expenses I not budget my savings. My income has both a fixed and variable component. The fixed component is my salary, my variable component is investments, bonus, commissions etc.
