I haven't really tested this yet, but I was wondering if anyone knew.....

How does it work if you budget for a Sub-Category (for example, Restaurant), but in the transaction detail, an expense gets coded as the Main Category (for example, Food & Dining)? When I look at my budget, it will show a budget for Restaurants (say $50), but will the expenditure in Food and Dining show up or will my actual expenditures on my budget show as $0?

Similarly, what if I spend money in a category for which I have no budget set up? Again, using the above example, lets say I spent $40 on Food and Dining, but had no budget set up for that category. In my budget view, will it show actual spending of $0.

If it is capturing everything, you would think that "actual" on my budget would be exactly equal to the monthly total of Transactions or Trends.

Anyone know about this?

Thanks,
Nick

I know you posted this a month ago but here's what i've noticed.

If a transaction is placed in the main category and it isn't one of your budget items, you're not going to see anything on your budget.

But you will see the main category on the pie chart in "Trends".

In the upper left corner on Trends, "All Categories" will likely be a larger number than what your budget total says- because of expenses that weren't in your budget.

If your transaction is coded with the main category then it will not appear on the budget for the sub category. For example, if I have a budget for Restaurants at 50 USD and I have one charge that comes over for 25 USD and it is applied to Food & Dining, then the budget will show Restaurants have a budget of 50 USD and actuals of 0 USD.

In the case were you spent $40 on Food and Dining, but had no budget set up for that category, the budget for Restaurant will it show actual spending of $0.

The only time "actual" on your budget would be exactly equal to the monthly total of Transactions or Trends is if you budget for every category at the main and sub category level.
