I currently have 2 CD's that I am considering consolidating and investing into a mutual fund, through a brokerage firm. Should I do this, or should I just renew the CD's?

I think that it is a matter of how much risk you want to take on. the more risk the better the potental return. I personally in this market and through 09 am limited my new investments in stock and bonds and holding more cash. The exception to that rule for me is my 401K which I;m average loading my investments.

It fully depends on how old you are. If your near retirement, keep it low risk and stay with CDs. If your young and can take risk, then heavily diversified mutual funds may offer better returns. If you want to play it safe, I would not renew the CD's if they are more than 1 year and do not offer a decent return. I would put that money in a savings account (there are a few that offer decent returns currently) and wait a few months to see what the market does. I would not go directly into stocks simply because of the risk.
The reasons for keeping it liquid, is if you do not have adequate savings (10-12 months), it would be better to have the money available rather than having to withdraw with penalty. If you do have that savings, I would still keep it liquid and wait for the market to recover to start buying and buy in on the recovery rather than risk it and buy in near a "bottom" only to find out its not the "bottom". And of course, if you have any credit card debt with a emergency fund, I would probably look at paying that off since nothing on the market can beat the APR on the majority of credit cards.

If you are ready to take risk than go for it, otherwise stay with CDs.
