First off, great job so far. Mint looks very promising.

The thing that is keeping me from committing 100% to mint.com is the fact that I cannot make custom categories. The sets of categories supplied by mint go a great way towards making categorizing transactions easier, but simply cannot be applied to every purchase I make.

I know that I'm able to add labels to transactions, but this only allows one level of categorization.

For instance, I am a pilot who works out of state. Therefore, a lot of my purchases are tax deductable, and I like to keep track of all my work expenses and what they are used for.

I'd like my own "Work" category with sub categories like...
Work
Airport Parking
Food: X City
Food: Y City
Materials
Dry Cleaning
etc...

That way I can see what I spend at work, and further, what I'm spending that money on. Are there any plans to add custom categories?

We're most certainly looking at expanding categories and/or letting folks customize them. For now, I would recommend using labels to create your own custom categories.

Custom categories has been a common suggestion so far, and using labels has been the solution.

Since that's the case, is the saving of labels a higher priority item to get done? Currently it seems that it still doesn't save labels, which means we have to remember and retype the label each time which makes it a tedious workaround/solution.

I would expect a lot of improvements to categorization very, very shortly.

hmm... it's been "very very" shortly since your post and I don't see any changes yet.

hehe ;)

I don't mean within a period of days;-) Product changes, after all, have to go through a number of different items to get to a live status:)

Review by product
Spec by product
Build in engineering/dev
QA

Etc., etc.

The VP of Product and I are going to post release notes when we have a product push. The notes will say what has changed & will have notes of what we're working on (where applicable).

Right now: There's a wide variety of issues (we're still in beta, after all) that we're trying to fix. Add bank issues, bugs, cosmetic bugs, etc...

Yeah yeah... I know :)

I have that problem at my job... trying to explain that just because something is asked for and someone "thinks it should be easy to code" doesn't mean that it can be done in a day.

I'm just giving you a hard time :)

No problem...I just wanted to let other folks that it isn't as simple as pushing a button;-) But it would be nice to have...

More categories that are missing:

Weight loss services
Mass transit (not everyone has cars!)
Take-out or order-in

Will add as I find more.
