On the left of the screen, under the accounts, mint is showing income, spending & net.
However, the income is not the true total of deposits. It seems to be inconsistently picking up the deposits? Where does it get the income number from? Is there a way in the tool to designate income specifically or do you just allocate it with a positive balance. I'm concerned that if I put income in the budget it will assume it should be a negative number and through the charts off.

The thing that you ahve to check are that the categories may have an impact if the deposit or withdrawl is counted. For example TRANSFER and CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS are not included in the calculatioins.

It would be nice if Mint posted information about this graph and the assumptions used in the calcualtions somewhere for the users to easily find and understand how the various features work.

Thanks, I realize now to allocate the deposits as income. It just seemed like Mint did it automatically, so it threw me off as to why only one deposit was recorded.

i have been consistently confused by this... i always seem to be thousands of dollars in the red, but realistically i don't see how i could for the last 12 months be spending 2 or 3 grand more than i make and still have managed to amass a little savings and maintain no credit card debt. My guess is that you are either counting credit card payments as money "spent" or you aren't taking into account positive amounts in typical "spending" categories - e.g. i pay the landlord a big check each month and my roommates each write me checks... which go in as positive amounts for the Mortgage & Rent category... i suspect these positive amounts aren't being included because that would account for the extra thousands of dollars missing here...

any confirmation on this theory?

The cash flow chart is meant to depict deposits vs. spending for a calendar month. Transactions categorized as transfers are indeed excluded. All categories within the parent category 'Income' are totaled. Spending sums all non-income, transfers and any transactions categorized as 'exclude from Mint'.

One common point of confusion is that transactions like direct deposits, that often have the word 'transfer' in the description, get mistakenly categorized at transfers and thus are excluded from the graph.

I assume you mean transfer and transactions categorized as "exclude from Mint" are NOT included in the spend. Is this correct?

can you confirm (or disconfirm) that positive amounts in typical "spending" categories are included appropriately i.e. reduce spending total?
e.g. let's say i buyt $400 in grocers, $250 in cloths, and $200 in gas this month. halfway through the month, I return some clothes i bought so i categorize the +150.00 as Shopping - Clothing, my total spending should be 400+250+200-150=$700

[i'll save you the trouble... i've already run the numbers and confirmed that, in fact, total spent DOES NOT include positive amounts in "spending" categories. PM me if you would like more details of how I confirmed this...]

Can you please bring this to the attention of Product and fix it. I would love to find out how much I'm ACTUALLY overspending each month (if at all).

Thank you!

I agree with you that any returns or positive amounts to a non income or spending account is not included either in the deposit section or nor does it reduce the spend account.

Hi,
All opening situations require you to loop through the income module for at least two months; the month of application and the next month. When EDBC results for all budgets equal pass for the first month but fail for the second month, the Summary results screen is presented. Review results.
