now that we have custom categories:

when I pay a credit card (hopefully more than minimum) = "debt payment"

this is the same category i use for my small overdraft loan, as that is a debt as well

when the credit card receives the payment, it automatically assigns this as "credit card payment" its important that this and my custom category are different and under different major categories

i have another custom category "savings deposit" its under "transfer" not investments, so that i can see the difference between my retirement deposits and just putting into short term savings.

in other words, i try to put certain custom categories under different major categories so they dont get lumped in the pie chart or the budget.

I love Mint.com! I have been looking for a tool like this since I started college.

I really like that we can add custom subcategories. It would be even better if we could customize ALL categories, at the primary level as well as sublevels.

Let users also be able to delete the default categories. For example, music is a profession for me. So while others would lump music expenses under an "entertainment" category, for me it generally belongs in "education". Another example: I think "shopping" is a very bad category because of the lack of accountability it creates for my budget. Putting useful categories like "clothing" inside of "shopping" makes it much more difficult to get a helpful large-scale overview of my budget in the Trends section. The more I can customize my budget and structure it in a way that suits me, the more I will use it.

In fact, why stop there? Allow multiple hierarchical levels of categories - as many levels as someone could possibly need (at least 4-5). This would get a lot of would-be small business owners using Mint, because it would start to transcend the personal finance level.

I agree, it would be really nice to change categories around, and throw out the ones I won't ever need. When I get a cat or a baby, I'll put them back on :)
Otherwise I really really like this site!!!

It would be really useful to see what portion of my income is going toward credit card payments; I can see it on my budget, but it doesn't show up as part of the "Trends" section. That would be great. Thanks!
