View Full Version : Duplicate Expense

Mint is reporting the same expense twice.
Build #: ph221.2
It shows this in all different views. I don't think I did anything to get it there. I can't delete the duplicate.

Yeah, this is an issue we're working on. It appears to be related to pending transactions, or issues where we're reading some transactions twice.
Does the exclude option drop it out of Mint?

The same thing happens to me with one of my credit card account. My guess is that it has to do with the financial company's online system since it's happened with the same account on various personal finance management sites. But I think Mint is aware of this and they're working on it (correct me if I'm wrong :)).
For now, I've been using the "Exclude from Mint" category to get rid of the duplicate transactions and make my Spending Trends more accurate.

I'm assuming you mean the "Exclude from Mint" option in the Category selection popup. If so, it doesn't change anything. I think it created another problem actually. It is showing the same transaction taking place in July AND in August.

The "Exclude from Mint" option under categories won't remove the transaction, but it won't calculate it into your spending trends.

Thanks for clarifying what I was trying to say;-)
Something we have to work on, that's for sure.

Here's a new spin on the problem. I've got a string of 5 duplicate transactions from one particular day. I've tried to change the category of the duplicate entries to "exclude from mint." That'll work, but only kinda-sorta. It somehow will propagate the category change to the other, original entry. I can't highlight and change only the duplicate (whichever I decide to be the duplicate - they're identical).
Also, when these particular entries are still categorized and not labeled as "exclude from mint," they seem to be confused as to what data to point to in order to create the sidebar trend graph. Highlighting the visit to the restaurant pulls up a trend graph that uses my salary income as its data.

Can you please send me the duplicate information to feedback@mint.com?
Amount, name of merchant, dates, etc.

I've managed to resolve some of the issues (linking of transactions) I mentioned before and I think I understand why Mint may be pulling in duplicate entries for a single transaction.
Often times my bank will list the transaction as pending and the date will slide from when it first posts until it finally clears. So, for every day that the transaction appears on the account, Mint will think it's new b/c of the changing date attached to it. This also happens frequently when the bank simply labels the transaction as "account activity" until it finally gets a name attached to it. Mint will download it and recognize it as two different transactions since it'll have two different names and (often) two dates between them (even though they have the same monetary value pinned to it).
I am going to delete the account and re-add it to see if the new bug fix that came out on the 7th solves some of these issues.

Customers can remove & add their accounts to resolve the problem of old duplicates. The only reason I don't make a strong recommendation to do so is that you will lose the existing history in your account:(

My bank modified a transaction because initially the restarunt ran it through without the tip amount. I tipped, and they re-ran it.
In my bank account I only have one transaction. But in Mint, I have two. One for the base amount and one for the base + tip.
I will mark exclude category for now, but shouldn't this get caught by Mint somehow?

A known issue that we're working on. I will post an update when I know that a fix has gone in.

Thanks for looking into this one.
It is essential that Mint make tools available to correct these duplicate entries without requiring an account be dropped and re-added.
Losing transaction history for any reason is simply not an option for me, once Mint is out of beta.
Hi all,
A lot of duplicate entries showed up this evening. I'm fairly sure they were not there yesterday. The only helpful note that I can add (for a programmer) is that I clicked on the 'update' icon on the Overview tab page this evening.
This makes things rather ugly -- I have (at last glance) about 15 duplicate entries. The only good thing (in a surreal sort of way), is that most of my last few months paychecks were duplicated too. :)
So, from what I've read so far (and I am a newbie at Mint), I can remove this account (main checking account) and re-add it and lose all my category changes , or mark the category as excluded from Mint, which is rather time consuming since I have to check over 170 entries.
Any other suggestions or work arounds for this issue?
Thanks,
Larry
Sorry -- I just saw this post:

Still, shouldn't have this been fixed already?

P.S. The search function didn't pull the above referenced thread up when using the search keys of:
delete duplicate entries
May want to have some take a look at the sql that is generated to see why the thread wasn't reported in the search results.

Did you do anything to the account? Update, etc? I've had a few reports of issues when folks updated their accounts. Don't know if it is a widespread issue at this time (customer service contacts don't indicate it as such).

I think you mean, did I click the "update" icon on the Overview tab page?
The answer, as I said in post #14 above, is yes, I did do that. I didn't realize that hitting the update icon was a possible problem until much later. I guess I'll have to delete the account and re-add them unless someone has a better solution.
Since hitting the update icon appears to be causing some grief, has anyone figured out what's going on? Any idea when it'll be fixed?

I hit "update" today and got a ton of duplicate transactions which didn't exist until today. How/when will this be fixed?

Escalated to product today...I would recommend against hitting the update button for right now (transactions *should* download automatically at night).

This has been an issue before and I seem to remember that the prior fix was one that would address the issue going forward. It would be nice if this next fix resolved the issue by removing *all* of my duplicate transactions *and* resolved the issue going forward.
And it doesn't seem to matter where you update your accounts (on the Overview or Account tabs) it still results in many duplicate transactions.
Is there a work around (aside from the suggestions mentioned previously in this posting) that you recommend in the meantime? I'm assuming not but figured I'd ask anyway.

I don't have a workaround, unfortunately. I've also mentioned the UI/UE issues with this to product...

I'm brand new to Mint, so I'm not sure if my issue is part of this problem.
I renamed a transaction, but it seems to have been duplicated and then a new name assigned to the duplicate. The original still exists and is factoring into spending totals, but I can't access it to recategorize it to exclude it. When I click it, the detail view is blank.
I *can* access the transaction under the new correct name, but that's the one I want to keep and not exclude. I am not sure if this is making sense.
ETA: I don't think this is the correct forum, but this is where the thread was... sorry if this is misdirected.
