What was wrong with the old one? I don't like having to drill-down when there is plenty of space for the expanded view.

My immediate guess is that we're trying to make space for additional categories & make it more intuitive for a broader set of customers.

my only complaint with the new Name and Categorize dialog is that the drop down menu pops up if my mouse passes over it. Either make it so you have to click the arrow to get the drop down, or make it so a quick pass over doesn't bring up the menu.
I was getting annoyed with this when splitting a transaction yesterday, when I moved the mouse to fill in the amount, I accidentally passed over the arrow and the whole menu popped up covering the amount text box I wanted to fill in.

yah that was my only complaint too... i like the combined dialog box personally... just tweak the ajax-ical timing mechanism (technical term).

I like renaming and I like the idea of making it more expandable for the future. I have two usability complaints though.
1) You cannot categorize multiple merchants without changing their name. The concept of categorizing and naming are orthogonal, should they really be combined anyways?
2) My problem with the menus is not the idea of drilling down but exposure. If I had started using mint under the new system, I would only be using 3 or 4 categories. With the new one I have to think "How did mint organize it?" I have to remember off of past usage. One quick example is thinking of credit card payments as a transfer.
Maybe have a search box with a drop down and autocomplete? So the person can type what they think of it as. I think "Credit Card Payment" and start typing it. I see a drop down with "Transfer->Credit Card Payment" and I now got to it faster but can get feed back to learn where it is at if I want to do menus only.

Actually, the new system already does this. :)
You can type directly in the category box, instead of looking for the category in the drop down list AND it does enter complete (as opposed to tab complete).
So if you want to categorize a transaction as gas/fuel, click into the text box for category, hit g, then hit down to highlight gas/fuel, and hit enter. :)
And if you type something that isn't a category, it won't let you click save.
I officially hate the new category "menu". The table was easy to visualize and assign categories. The menus seem to keep popping away if you aren't fast enough. I like to "enter text" box, which should have been incorporated on the previous category menu.

I also noticed that when you apply a category to multiple transactions, the merchant names all change to "multiple merchants", or something like that. Is there a way to avoid this?

The old form was so much easier to use for Renaming/Categorizing Accounts. I used to rename/categorize everything but this new way has made it more time consuming and I had to completely delete/re-add an account due to the "Multiple Accounts" issue.
Also, I do all this on a laptop. Those drag and follow menus are really annoying on a mouse touchpad.

The new way of categorizing allows you to type in the name of the category instead of looking for it in a list. Just start typing the category in the box and a drop down of possibilities will appear which you can navigate using the up/down arrow keys. Much simpler than searching for them on a list. And you don't have to use the mouse at all. :)

I don't have a preferance as long as they add custom categories. :)

until the "pending transaction" issue gets resolved, is it possible to have the exclude from mint checkbox on the initial dialog? i find that i use that most often than having to re-categorize.
thanks!

I am not loving the drop down either, it keeps going away.

If you want to edit your profile on facebook, you can click on the part you want to change and start typing. Name and Category entries within the transaction table should be editable directly in the view, or at least the button to bring up the menu should be on the item itself.

Yeah, renaming things to "Multiple Merchants" is a BUG - leave the original name in there. Can't you fix this? It's been weeks like this... so dissapointing...

I agree completely. All in due time...
Thanks for your comments,
