Example

Me - Internet, Direct Tv and pays the full rent
RM - Electric, water, gives me half the rent

We work out the differences and he gives me the difference via check and I deposit it and write 1 check to the landlord.

The problem with Mint is that I can't break these fees out. I could but it's a lot of work.

I want the rms entire financials scrubbed from my trans report, it can be done, but with a lot of work.

Example in my case
Split his check to me into
1. Water I owe
2. Electric I owe
3. Left over is what he gave me for rent, which I now would remove from mint. So only my rent/mtg shows up
4. Split the DTV bill by 50% and eliminate the other 50% from Mint
5. Split the Comcast bill by 50% and eliminate the other 50% from mint
6. Split my rent check and his portion I wipe from mint

That's a lot of work, it can be done easier.. That is about 6 complicated steps...

Mint needs a RM function... just my 2 cents

why don't you just write him one check for what you owe... the he writes you one check for what he owes and you pay the actual accounts as you normally would. then you categorize your stuff just as you would normally and you only have to split his check into the 3 components instead of 6.
that's how i do it with my 2 roommates. except screw checks...it's all online transfers =)

An alternate approach would be to somehow integrate into something like Billmonk (billmonk.com) which could then accommodate split bills.

That creates issues on our end. It's easier to do all our bills at once and write 1 check. His bills are always more than mine, so we subtract that from his half of the rent. The difference is what I deposit then I write the full rent check to the LL..

Mint needs a better system..

I agree with this... here's what I've come up with (it doesn't work, but I keep thinking it ought to...)

I pay all the bills, and get a check from my roommate for half. On mint, once it's posted to my account, I categorize the check (which is a deposit, so, income,) as "Utilities," and I think Mint ought to understand that income in the utilities category offsets the debits in that category. But, it doesn't. At least for the sake of the "Overview" page...

Agree that it would be helpful to have a way to handle this...

Thanks!

this is essentially what i was saying - i think Mint is still just having trouble balancing debits and credits in general.

I plan to continue using this strategy though, in hopes that sometime soon they will fix this and all my past transactions will magically be accurately represented. =)

right, Mint ;) ;)

I have this same problem. My pie charts are dominated by items later paid by my roommate.

One of the best advantages of Buxfer is that it handles roommate splits REALLY gracefully - it takes into account just your share in the analysis, etc, and allows you to easily split any transaction between any group of people.
I wish mint had this.

We use this expense sharer which we found here http://www.screeperzone.com/expensesharer/xsharer.html .. this does a very excellent job of reducing the number of transactions.. and also its very easy to enter expense.

This site exactly solves what you are talking about.. it has the share concept.. you enter something like your friend shares 1 part and other friend shares 2 part.. this site will finally solves the graph and gets you the least number of transaction.. pretty gud one.
