I want the ability to customize the category list and add my own.

Something we're most certainly looking at.

I think this functionality is critical. Here's a perfect example. I recently made an insurance payment. Because I have both house and auto with the same company, the bill is a combined insurance bill. The only category choices I have however is auto or home.

I agree that this is an important feature. But, if I'm understanding your scenario correctly, couldn't you just use the "split transaction feature" and put part of the payment towards auto insurance, and part towards home insurance?

Thanks for pointing that out:)
We will most certainly be looking at custom categorization in the near future. One of the things we will have to figure out is how to not clutter the UI too much and/or start going into feature overload...

No problem. I'm here to help. And to complain once in a while. :)
That's an interesting point about the UI getting cluttered. I didn't think of that.

Hi
While you guys don't support investment accounts or customization of categories, what do you guys suggest on how to handle money transferred out to an investment account. I current categorize it as "Financial and Invest" but then it shows up in my expenses as a very large expense every month, that dwarfs the pie chart. And it's not really an expense.
Thanks

I've been using Mint for a few days and I really think it's a great tool and fun to use.
The only major drawback I've come across is the lack of flexible categories. I really would like the ability to create my own categories and not have to try and force-fit my transactions into the closest choice.
I think if Mint can improve on this one particular feature set, it will remove one of the biggest complaints users have had. I'm very pleased with the rest of the system. Good work.

Thanks for protecting me from myself. I find that the major drawback of Quicken/Money/Etc - is that the customizable options quickly become overwhelming...then I stop using it.
Since Mint has provided a simple usable UI - with categories focused on the correct things - it's actually a time saver, not a time waster.
If Mint does roll out custom categories for some of the users who would like them; I'd prefer to be left with the "MINT recommended" ones.
Mint beats Quicken because you've thought long and hard about the things I should focus on in personal finance. If you start giving me too many options and making me think too hard about it - you've lost your competitive edge.
Just my opinion - thanks!
