Hi Folks,
We're looking at supporting Loan accounts in the near future. In order to build the best product possible, we're looking for feedback from our community. Here's what we would like to hear from our customers:
1. What features are an absolute "must have".
2. What features would you like to see that currently aren't offered by your current provider.
3. What you don't like.

super awesome to have : burn-down chart for various loans... average out the amounts i'm paying monthly on my student loans and auto loan and give me a nice burn down chart of how long it's going to take me to pay off (bonus points for automatically breaking out the amounts for principal and interest for each monthly payment... i'm currently doing this manually with splits in Yodlee, not sure how feasible it is to scrape that info, but it is available on the respective sites)
other nice to have: clear comparisons between interest rates on loans and various savings accounts (... and investments?) .. the purpose being to compare where is the best place to put my available cash... i.e., is my savings account rate down so low because of recent Fed rate cuts that now i should shift over to paying off my loans, or maybe based on recent performance of individual stock holdings i can conclude that i want to throw some extra cash at my investments)... MONEY, if you can do something like this!

I'm new to this whole financial management thing. I tried Wesabe but that didn't work, Yodlee seemed to work but went over my head. The only thing I see lacking about Mint.com is loan management. Until that's included, the site doesn't really provide a clear view of my financial status. I'm sure there are plenty of good features that could be added to handle them, but at this point I'd be happy just to have some basic management like other accounts on the site.

For me, it would be very helpful to have a means to show multiple disbursements with the same lender. i.e. My student Loans are a mixture of subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans through Nelnet Lenders (http://www.nelnet.net).
I'd really like it if I could track the Unsubsidized and Subsidized disbursements separately.
Also, a future feature could be a "at this rate you will pay off this debt by Month YEAR, e.g. "To Pay off $20,312 at 3.5% APY with an average payment of $212, this loan will be fulfilled Feb 31, AD 2137."
I think seeing that would help me stay committed to extra payments against the principal.
I love the idea of adding Loan services to mint. My Student Loans and Car are all that stands between us a liquidity. Can't wait to be debt free and Mint & Wasabe (as a tag team until one of you does what the other can) are helping tremendously (if twice the work. :P)

Beside the obvious loan summary (interest rate, pmt amt, balance, etc) and payment history - it would be great to tie them to assets to know equity in the case of real estate. Modeling what if scenarios in terms of refinancing or paying off with a LOC or Savings would be cool or making an extra payment a year or which one to pay off sooner.

Hi, new mint user here and new to the forums. I have to say I am very impressed so far with the website.
As far as adding student loan accounts... honestly I would be happy with just the basics, such as an overall account summary, if that's the best that can be done (per technology/security limitations). I think it would just be great to be able to see everything in one place. Same with adding investment accounts... basically I would like to log on to mint and see my entire financial picture (investments, student loans, ect... all liabilities vs. all assets).
Great work on the product! Keep it up!

I'm very excited about being able to track loans with Mint. It's already an awesome product, but once it can track loans it will be even better. I can't wait until it can track all assets and liabilities for a one stop shop for my complete financial picture.

I would like to know how integrated the loan portion would be to the rest of the accounts. It might be helpful to allow users to switch between considering the impact of their various loans on their financial status or keep them separate.
Mint could try implementing stand alone loan management for now, and then experiment with integrating it into the rest of the financial picture.
The important thing would be to pull in principal, rate of interest and term of loan for now and maybe allow the payments from the checking or savings to be linked to a loan. Is that too much functionality?
What kind of loans could you support?
Auto loans, student loans, home equity loans, (personal loans)?
Btw, what do you think of throwing in another tab under the Transfer category?
Transfer
Credit card payment
** Loan payment **
Thats all for now.

I would be great to have loans supported however I would like to make it an option to see the cash to debt ratio with and/or without the loans (seeing just how much debt I'm in just as soon as you open mint is depressing)
We should be able to show what happens when we adjust your payment plans to see how quickly(or slowly) you can pay them off.
Another addition could be a timeline feature where you can watch a number of loans (most people have different kinds: private, subsidized, unsubsidized) so you an see if its a feasible goal to pay them off in 5, 10, 15 years. Also it should recommend which ones to pay off first.
You may want to do college education ads or refinance ads to show how you can either defer loans(wink wink) and continue education or consolidate.
Great job Mint. How about jobs offers for poor students??

I have some loans that do not have online access... it would be great if I could manually input the information about the loan and have it tracked. It is with American General Finance - and they are technology-resistant.
The Pay-down chart would be great too - "You are paying xx.xx amount, you will pay this loan off on this date. You will have paid a total of xx.xx interest."

I am a new user as well, I just can't stand Quicken anymore. I am looking for the loan tracking as well, but please make sure to make it easier to avoid double entries. It seems like with Q, any type of payment somehow gets doubled, because the payments don't match on the same day, etc. Avoiding these double entries when transferring between accounts is very important to me. Thanks.

I have two suggestions for the loan integration component:
1)Based on category (loan payment, card payment, etc), have a simple chart that shows money spent towards debt vs other money spent. This would help members see how much of their money is actually flexible. It would be a simple visual like the cash vs debt graphic on the front page. Extra points if I can customize it based on category. For example, I consider my rent and loan payments as payments that are not flexible. I would want to know how much money above and beyond that I am spending that I can actually effect.
2) I'm sure you've already thought of this, but I think loan payment/loan consolidation is one of the few areas where I can see a benefit for Mint's "suggestion" feature. For example, I see that you are paying XX.X% on these loans, you should really switch to this company that is offering X.X% rate. It would be more of a value that telling me I should switch from Verizon Wireless to Verizon Wireless :)
Other than that, I agree with the overwhelming opinion here that the "at the current rate, you will pay off your debt by XX/XX/XXXX, at the cost of X,XXX.XX in interest. Would you like to see how a payment increase would affect this?" feature would be absolutely killer.

The lack of loan account support is the only thing keeping Mint from having an accurate overview of my financial position (that's actually an enormous compliment given the number of account Mint staff have already incorporated). But like everyone else, I'd like to see loan support sooner rather than later--and on the same scale as support for other kinds of accounts. Mint's greatest value is in showing folks where they can save money, and there's no better way to save money than comparing lenders and knowing where/how/when to consolidate. Mint's in a prime position to provide that service. I'm ready for it now. :)

Adding collateral-ized loans ie - mortgage, auto etc. without tracking the value of the asset will hose any net worth or cash to debt type calculations.
At a minimum users should be able to manually input the value of the asset. Better still would be to partner with zillow.com (Real estate) and edmunds or kelly blue book (auto) to get real time updates.

Absolutely agree with hazmat above. Partnering with Zillow and KBB would be great to get real time valuation on major property assets. Ownership of these assets, and not just liquidity and market investments, is a key ingredient for calculating net worth.

Access Group loans, as suggested above, would be great. Also, maybe a feature where you could enter the loan amount and interest rate and apply it.
I don't always have time to do the research on whether a debt consolidation loan makes sense for me. Being able to enter my credit score, then with Mint and their financial partners doing a quick analysis given my current interest rates on loans, then giving me a ballpark idea if consolidating would save me money...that would be awesome. I'm willing to refinance anything if it makes sense. Mint is already tops...loans in the mix will make it even better.
One additional thought. Your business plan may be a perfect match for partners wanting to sell us our current credit score so we could explore loan options.

Showing how much you can save by paying an extra amount each month or even just in a one time payment. Displaying the resulting loan term and totals paid in interest. That would be awesome. I'm pretty new to this site seems great. One more suggestion(probably the wrong place for it) Adding support for paying down credit cards with your bank account that you've added. Making this site the one stop place for all you finances. thanks for doing this

I'd love to see something where you can purchase a credit score, or pull a credit score from a site where you have a membership (like freecreditreport.com or myfico.com) and have that tie into your ways to save. That way if I see a chance to refi an auto loan, then I'm not going down a road towards an application that will never be approved.

I think we're going to build some functionality into the site that will help with the likelihood of being accepted for a certain offer. The tricky part, of course, is that credit/FICO scores would play into this & we wouldn't entirely know this.If possible, I think we would have to make it work with what customers report back to us directly on the site.

I'd like to see very simple functionality implemented before getting into amortization flash apps, etc.
How will loans affect the assets and debt on the overview page?
I guess the debt part is obvious, but it seems you could use the amount paid off of the loan principal to add to assets in some cases, like a mortgage. I know it would be difficult to assess the current value of the property, but by giving the asset to debt graph it would only seem accurate to include the portion paid off as an asset.
Anyway, will need Citimortgage and BMW financial interfaces.
Thanks for working so fast on getting my other interfaces up-- suntrust and smithbarney benefit access.
When do you expect the loan piece up?

I think it's important to differentiate between auto loans, student loans, and mortgages, wherever you display the loans.
For student loans (most important to me right now), a lot of people prepay. I'd like to see (both for each loan and for the total of student loans) the expected payoff date, based on recent history of prepayments. So if your payment is $500 a month and you pay $1000 a month, how many months of $1000 a month will it take to pay off the loan?
It would also be neat to have a bar showing how much of the original principal balance of the loan you've paid off. For mortgages this might show you some of the home equity you've earned (unless your house has declined in value, of course)...

For mortgages this might show you some of the home equity you've earned (unless your house has declined in value, of course)...
I guess I could see having a balance available on a home equity line of credit, but not on the house itself. "Equity" is a nice concept, but purely hypothetical. I don't want to see anything but the actual numbers. If we had equity, who would enter the value of the home? Who would update it? How often?
I can't imagine anything worse than over-inflating your overall net worth based on the hypothetical selling price of your home when you are not intending to actually sell it! The news today is full of people who did just that, and they are paying for it. I don't want that to be me!
If Mint had an option for manual entries, I guess someone who wanted to include the perceived value of equity could put in a manual entry for it. Then we could all choose whether to include the value of home equity, collectibles, art, and other things that we all make a guess on the value.

Good point. Student loans are more of a concern, because they just represent a straight liability, not a loan plus an asset. Of course Mint could partner with Zillow or something to estimate your home's value...but that's not a precise science (no appraisal is)...for student loans, I owe what I owe, period. No guesswork there.
I agree with all of the posts above, that mortgage and student loans are a needed addition. Due to the myriad of lenders I hope that there'll be an option to key in the terms of any particular loan if the lender is not available for direct download.
Also, a good clearinghouse for FFEL student loan info can be found at http://www.nslds.ed.gov/ - this site allows you to download all of your FFEL student loan info from one place. It would be a great addition to Mint.

It would be great if we could get a single bar graph that shows current market value of asset, remaining principle of loan, and remaining equity on that asset.
Then if there is an equity loan of some type, a further bar graph showing that as well.
Furthermore, place latest credit rating in a compare to bar graph with people with similar salaries.
Finally, probably a link to bankrate.com that provides customer with lower rates for a similar loan.

Damon,
I am relatively new to Mint but have settled on it over MS Money in an effort to bring together money management into a single picture with a good situational awareness picture. Being retired military I use the phrase "Common Operational Picture (COP)" and it does provide a great one but requires a little work but with good tools that is fine. When loans are added I would like to see a "What If" tool, would be great to have on the investment side for that matter also. The desire for this has been articulated in different ways with other posts but what I would be looking for is the ability to click on the "What If" button and it would tell me the impact of increasing my payment $XX a month, or impact of a variable rate going up or down, or impact of making a one time payment of $XX against principal on Jan 1 every year, etc. On the investment side kind of the came concept with contributions and rates of return. It would really go a long way in true money management. Folks often do not understand what a huge impact a little bit here or there can have on a long term debt (mortgage) or investment (IRA).
Thanks, great stuff!

I would love to see Mortgage and Auto Loan integration.
Adding the ability to see how extra payments to principal would have an impact on the loan would be great. eg Time to payoff and interest saved over life of term by increasing payments
A refinance calculator would be very helpful.
Seeing how much has gone to interest and principle on the loan would be nice.

If you can track everything accurately that's awesome, but if you really want to help people pay off their debt you defintely need to include a debt stacking solution. People pay the MINIMUM of all the debts on the list but they pay what ever extra they have committed to debt payoff to the top item on the list. Once that's paid they add their extra PLUS their old no longer existing payment to the next item on the list. They continue to do this until the list is gone. The list can be stacked by highest balance or highest rate or a combination of each. Also you may want to include an amorization worksheet for the fixed debts so that people can see their actual interest. Awesome site I can't wait to use this site to it's fullest keep up the good work, God bless.
Damon,
It's difficult to comment on features in a complete way not knowing which loan accounts you think you'll be able to support.
I do believe that loan account support will be valuable if and only if the distinction between principle and interest can be tracked. Otherwise, it's no different than what's on there now if I just code the transaction to 'loan' or some similar entry.
On that note, my big question has to do with mortgages. A lot of people (me included) have there mortgage payment with not only principle and interest, but also an automatic escrowing of property taxes and homeowner's insurance, and I'm wondering whether the module will be able to support distinguishing between these "line items" within the payment. If so, it will be a huge help.
It would seem to me that car loans and student loans are pretty straight forward (principle & interest).

1. A simple model to quickly calculate the time it will take to payoff a loan if we change our monthly payment amounts, and to calculate that backwards as well (what our monthly payment needs to be if we want to pay it off in x years). The model should also show how much we would save in interest if we were to implement these changes.
2. Monitor government loan interest rates, show a historical graph of these rates, and perhaps make recommendations on whether to consolidate now or to wait for rates to drop.
3. Add the services I use: Mohela (www.mohela.com) and American Education Services (www.aessuccess.org)

I use the direct student loans and the citibank sites to log into my student loans. I'd like to be able to see my loan total at the least.
I do not want mint to become cluttered and messy trying to cater to everything everyone wants. AS LONG AS mint will still stay SIMPLE and CLEAN, I wouldn't mind seeing the interest rate of my loans, and someone did suggest that it would be neat to see when you can pay it all off by adding extra money towards theh principal.

LOL, complaining about customer service regarding a free product.

They make money off of us--just not from our pockets. They ask for our valuable financial information. We are worth money to them--we have the right to ask for proper customer service.

Come back when it's not in beta, then. They are doing us a favor by letting us help test this and take part in shaping a new product - it's not a common opportunity. What is proper customer service when the store isn't open yet?

For real, we're not customers, we're 'beta-testers' hehe :D

Wow. They're doing *us* a favor by letting us find their bugs for them? I'll bet even Mint's employees don't think that.
Don't get me wrong. I love Mint.
But customer service does not mean service provided by the customers. It means service provided TO the customers.

The store's open when you can come in off the street and sign up. Call it beta forever, doesn't change the facts. GMail's still "Beta", do you think they would ignore customer complaints or ask people to bug test for them?

This probably isn't the right post for this, since obviously loans are supported now.
Just wondering if it's possible to add loan info manually? I'm trying to track my students loans through wachovia
I login through this url: https://online.educaid.com/borroweraccess/studentsignon.cfm?&y=

I just want to add my voice to this situation. I have recently joined mint and waited for about a week till the Citibank legelese problem was solved before I could do much (Good job btw).
However, when I managed to add my citi checking account, my did not get added was my outstanding personal loan with them. Of course a more accurate reflection of my liabilities would be greatly appreciated and thus I would like to see support for personal loans in the future.

I've only seen one mention of private/personal loans. So I'll second that.
We should be able to add in a custom loan with our own terms and have mint track it alongside our bank loans.
Great site btw - makes my quickbooks obsolete.
I would like to third that. I graduated with several types of loans. One type of loan was through the University itself and it's pretty basic (no online account or anything), so I doubt it will ever be added.
A custom loan feature is exactly the sort of thing I need!

I'm just adding my voice to the call for private/personal loan management. I just signed up a couple of days ago and this is a feature that I'm already seeing as a huge need.

I am unable to add my KeyBank loan, as detailed in this forum post:
http://forums.mint.com/showpost.php?p=17928&postcount=43
Any thoughts? All of my other accounts (including a loan through a different bank) come up perfectly.
Thanks all.
Hi--I have a Line of Credit and in this economy, have to withdraw from it more than I'd like. There is no way (that I have found) for me to track that. Could we:
1) show different transactions for loans, rather than just the balance?
2) have the ability to reassign the Loan account to a credit card account?
Or any other option you can tell me?

Please add Mohela for student loans!!!
Also, I notice that my Sallie Mae only shows principal - it would be great if interest was pulled into Mint as well!!
Thanks!

I think Mint is wonderful... but am continually surprised that MOHELA hasn't been added yet as there are so many requests for it... including mine!
Please add Mohela loan support, and then my love for Mint will be complete.

Would really like to have my Life Insurance policies show up in Mint, all the rest of the accounts show up now. We have cash value with the insurance and I would like to see it as part of my net worth/assets in Mint. Thank you very much.

I added my mortgage into mint.com, but don't see any of the transactions that are associated with the mortgage; just see a balance. Is this the intended functionality? Would like to be able to see the payments and categorize by principal and interest.
