View Full Version : Multiple Categories per Transaction

I understand that I can add multiple labels for each transaction but I would like to be able to set multiple categories for a transaction and set how much goes into each category.

For example, I pay my rent and utilities and anything else I own my landlord in one check. Right now I have to choose the entire transaction as rent or utilities but for spending trends it is misrepresented. If I was able to set a certain amount for rent and a certain amount for utilities then it would solve the problem.

Just a thought.

What do you think?

Exactly my problem/need/hope/wish/desire. Any word on this? Will this feature be implemented? If so, when? Soon?

Seems like a number of requests have been made for this. It's the main thing holding me back from using this service.

Hi Damon,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm subscribed to this thread so if and when there is a definitive answer on this I would really appreciate it if you posted something here so that I am notified. Can you commit to that?

Or is there another way to get notifications about new features? Perhaps an RSS feed from a Mint blog or something

Thanks,

Damon, I'm hoping that updating this feature is your number one priority. It appears to be mint.com's achilles' heel right now. It's the only way I can see with the way your system is set up to break out my cash and ATM transactions. Right now, I have a huge segment of my budget snapshot that is simply not categorized and I have no way of knowing what I'm spending (at least not with the mint system) once the cash is withdrawn from the bank. You've gotta help us. Thanks.

In Microsoft Money this is referred to as split transactions, or in Mint could aptly be named split categories. Essentially the need is there to split the total of a transaction across multiple categories.

I find this most useful when purchasing from stores like Target, Walmart, etc. where you could be hitting multiple categories. Additionally this is essential for places where you get cash back. You might only spend $10 on groceries, but get $40 cash back.

Keep us posted. Thanks.

How do I split/categorize an individual transaction?
1. Login to your Mint account.
2. Go to the “Transactions” tab.
3. Locate the transaction you want to split.
4. Place a check in the box next to the transaction.
5. Press the “split” option.
6. A page will come up that will allow you to change the merchant name and categorize the transaction. Make any applicable changes here.
7. Press on the split button to enter in the dollar amount(s) for what you are splitting.
8. Press Save.

Fantastic Damon, thanks to you and your team.

More things I need before I can switch to Mint. (http://forums.mint.com/showthread.php?p=6669#poststop)

Looking forward to more improvements. -ill

Hi Damon,

I know how to split a category, the problem I am having is that I am trying to split a merchant when I have already created a rule for that merchant. Specifically, I frequent Target, and need to be able to split almost every purchase there. Unfortunately, when I first signed up for Mint, I hit "create a rule" with Target to always categorize it as "groceries". Now, whenever I split a target purchase, it splits it just fine, but the minute I logout, it reverts back to "groceries". I am having to recategorize each purchase every day I login so that I can keep my spending trends straight. Is there a way to "uncreate a rule"?

Thanks,
Sherry

Hi Damon (if your still there)

Regarding your instructions on how to split, you also have to click on the "Edit Detail" tab below the transaction. On the next widow is the "Split" option- in the upper right corner.

It was hard for me to see the details tab.

Hi folks, I'm new here, so hopefully this isn't terribly obvious... I understand how to split transactions -- no big deal in the current version of the on-line product. However, what I'm really interested in is having Mint remember how to split identical transactions.

For example: I pay my mortgage with one online withdrawal. e.g. "WASH MUTUAL LOAN XXXXX" etc.
There are three parts to this transaction: Mortgage + tax + insurance.

I can split the transaction fine with the split button. However, if I ask Mint to "always categorize the transaction", it categorizes ALL three parts as "Mortgage and Rent" -- thus defeating the purpose of splitting and memorizing..

Any ideas?
