View Full Version : Options to control automatic renaming

Hi,
If a transaction shows up for me in Mint as
Check CardStarbucks Usa 1234567 Vista CaDate 10/21/07 0 1234567890 0 1234
Mint correctly removes the 'check' part out. The card is left in and the rest of the transaction name is chopped up accordingly. The resulting name is "Cardstarbucks" or "Cardcr Consumerreports" and so on. This is incredibly annoying and breaks mint's categorization system.
I noticed that the account profile controls are rather... light on options. This is kind of frustrating, as I'd love to have a greater degree of control over how the naming system works. (Even the ability to look up stored renames and modify them as needed would be nice!) For example, if I could add a "always exclude 'Check Card'" from a name, that would be nice. Or even better, allow advanced users to get funky with regular expressions or something to that extent, that way you can give users some real control!
As another example... a Starbucks in Vista, CA comes up differently than a Starbucks in Carlsbad, CA. Right now they show up as 'Cardstarbucks Vista USA' and 'Cardstarbucks Carlsbad USA'. If I could automatically rename anything that matches the query of "*starbucks*" to "Starbucks" (and from there trigger the auto-categorizer) that'd be pretty sweet and save me a bunch of time.
As things are right now, it's really annoying.
Forgive my verbosity,
tom

You can create rules to rename your transactions (select a transaction, and click rename, or just double click it).
However there's currently no way to view/edit all the rules you've created (I really hope there is soon... my starbucks all come up as "Starbucks asd" because I ran some old rename test and now I can't change that rule, and none of the new rules seem to override it).
Damon (the admin) might have some more info as to when this is expected, but at the very least it is on the list to be added.

I agree that auto-renaming is a pain and causes me much more frustration than good. In fact, I don't know that auto-renaming has ever worked to my advantage. Even simple things like Taquiera Poblano (my fave mexican restaurant) was changed to Taquiera Pobland. This isn't so far from the original name that I can't figure it out. But why the hell was it changed in the first place???
In my opinion, Mint should never automatically change the name of a transaction. That is what users have rules for. At the very least, users should be able to opt out of the auto-renaming feature.
Thanks,
Jami

This is an issue I've most certainly provided feedback on. Let's hope it changes for the better in the near future.

Any news on this front? Consider implementing it the same way Buxfer does - allowing you to specify keywords that automatically translate to tags.

Hi everyone. I was reading the post and was wondering if there are any further updates to this. I did see there is now an edit for automatic categorization, but non for auto Renaming.
Please update,
thanks,

Is there any update on this? I find this extremely annoying as well. I constantly have to hover over "Jewel" to see what the transaction should be.
Example:
Jewel Grocery
Jewel Express Gas
Jewel of Siam
All three of these are renamed Jewel and tagged as grocery. That is correct for the first transaction, however the second is a gas station and the third is a Thai restaurant. Seeing that I hit all three up every month, it is annoying to have to go back and change.
this is just one example of many that I have to deal with which keeps me from using Mint more often.
I'd appreciate an update on this as well.
I have an old rule that i can't edit/delete or even see and i now have a conflict.

Just piling on.
My bank's online payments now all show up as "online payment 1512351261 to (recipient name)", which Mint categorizes as "online payment" -- which defeats the auto-categorization entirely.
The rudimentary tagging logic is the biggest flaw in an otherwise great product.

Why can't we simply turn off Automatic Naming if you choose too. I'd much rather have control over it, even the limited amount Mint offers, and name stuff myself than have Mint rename it. If you shop on a military base regularly, everything comes up as a Building #... well Mint just puts BLDG for all your transactions. It makes the product useless to me except to monitor occasionally for identity theft.

I have opened support requests for this and still no answer back regarding this bug.
Mint, any updates?

Yep same here... For e.g. we have a Vons grocery store and a Vons gas station. Mint decides to name all of these Vons, so if I make a rule, it would categorize all of them to either gas or grocery store.
If it were based on the statement instead, I could easily say, categorize VONS FUEL as gas and fuel, and VONS STORE as grocery.
FIX THIS MINT! It really really sucks, and like other people here I can't see how hard it would be to base the rules off the real statement text instead of your guessed names.
Thanks

I use ING Direct. All of my automatic bill payments start with "Electronic payment to", which mint categorizes as "Electronics" whether I'm paying my gas bill or water bill...
I can't create meaningful rules because of this "feature". I would have thought it would be more sophisticated by now.
Please let me know when this is fixed so I can continue to use what would otherwise be a very useful service.

I agree with the previous poster, this is ridiculous: I pay ALL of my bills through ING Direct, so when my bill payments show up in Mint, it categorizes them as "Electronics" and names them all the same thing, no matter who the payment went to. I have to manually rename and categorize my bill payments every single time. This takes away a significant portion of Mint's usefulness. Please Mint, fix this!
